A container, usually rectangular, fabricated from wood, metal, cardboard, corrugated, etc

Box Dimensions
Corrugated Box dimensions are always stated as the inside dimensions in Length x Width x Height sequence.

Chipboard
A paperboard that is often made from recycled material. Chipboard can be used to make partitions (often called inserts or dividers), pads, and backing for documents/pictures in envelopes or frames.

Corrugated Board
Board formed by gluing one or more sheets of a fluted corrugated medium to one or more smooth linerboards. Partitions (often called inserts or dividers) and pads can also be manufactured out of corrugated paper.

The most common types include:
  • Single Face - one corrugated medium glued to one linerboard
  • Single Wall - one corrugated medium glued to two linerboards Single wall corrugated (C flute)
  • Double Wall - basically two single wall boards combined
Double Wall, basically a C flute single wall combined with a B flute single wall.
  • Triple Wall - three single wall boards combined

Corrugated Pallet
A shipping pallet that contains materials only found in corrugated.

Benefits over wooden pallets include:
  • Corrugated pallets weigh less
  • No nails or splinters
  • Exempt from international standards

  • Recyclable

Die Cut
A shape that is atypical and requires a die board to be produced. Partitions, pads, and boxes can all be die cut.

Edge Crush Test (ECT)
Amount of force necessary to crush on-edge combined board. This test is a key factor in determining the compression strength of a corrugated box.

Flute/Corrugation
The wavy ridges that are glued to the linerboards. Flutes run from top to bottom, which significantly increases the stacking strength of the box. Chase Partitions, Inc. offers corrugated in B, C, and doublewall combination flutes.

Mailing Tubes
Tubes made from solid fibre material. Excellent for shipping posters, documents, pictures, etc.
Pads
Typically used to separate layers of partitions in a box, pads can also be used to divide boxes, or add backing strength to documents/pictures while being sent through the mail.

Partitions
Often called inserts or dividers, partitions are interlocking pieces of corrugated, chipboard, or fiberboard. They are used to protect products during shipment, and also add stacking strength to boxes once inserted.

Regular Slotted Container (RSC)
A box made with flaps of equal length in order for them to meet in the center of the box once folded over. The most common type of box used in shipping.

Score
A crease or fold on corrugated or fiberboard, which allows the board to be easily folded.

Slot
Cut in the corrugated, chipboard, or fiberboard that allows individual pieces to easily interlock and form partitions.

Z-pads
A pad with two scores going in opposite directions, which folds into a "z" shape and divides a box in to equal halves
